Kinnaur Hosts the Great Backyard Bird Count 2025: A Celebration of Avian Diversity
Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh, became a hub of avian enthusiasm as the globally renowned Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) was successfully conducted in the region on February 16, 2025. With active participation from bird lovers and eco-conscious youth, the event aimed to build a strong birding community while enhancing the understanding of Kinnaur’s diverse bird population.
A Collective Effort for Conservation
The event was supported by the District Administration and the Science and Technology Department of Himachal Pradesh and coordinated by volunteers from Aum and Zed Tells who ensured a well-organized and informative experience for participants.
Birding enthusiasts gathered at Brelingi and Kupa, two picturesque locations known for their rich biodiversity. Eight passionate participants took part in the initiative, documenting an array of bird species and contributing to global bird conservation efforts.
A Glimpse of Kinnaur’s Avian Treasures
The event turned out to be an exciting opportunity to observe and record a variety of birds, including migratory species that make the long journey from Siberia to Kinnaur during this season. Some of the notable birds spotted during the count included Ibisbill, Brown Dipper, Green-winged Teal, Eurasian Woodcock, Himalayan Griffon and many more!
These sightings reaffirmed Kinnaur’s importance as a crucial habitat for both resident and migratory bird species.
Voices from the Field
For many participants, the GBBC was not just about birdwatching—it was an experience that deepened their connection with nature. Mahesh Negi, one of the event’s organizers and a passionate birder for three years, shared his thoughts:
"Birding is a passion of mine, and while I have done it alone and in groups, today’s experience felt truly special. It is heartening to see the community in Kinnaur coming together to appreciate and protect our avian friends. The enthusiasm and collective effort give me hope for a more bird-friendly future in the region."
For Sakshi Negi, a beginner birder, the event was a gateway into a newfound appreciation for birds and conservation:
"It was an incredible experience. I deeply appreciate the chance to learn, observe, and connect with nature in such a meaningful way."
Looking Ahead
The GBBC in Kinnaur concluded on a high note, leaving participants inspired to continue their efforts in protecting and celebrating the diverse birdlife of the region. Events like these not only contribute valuable data to global conservation initiatives but also help instil a deeper sense of responsibility towards preserving the natural world.
As birding gains momentum in Kinnaur, one thing is certain—the region has much to offer to both seasoned birdwatchers and curious newcomers. Here’s to many more successful bird counts and a future where Kinnaur’s skies remain filled with the songs of its incredible avian inhabitants!
